Craftsman 1/2 hp does not open in cold weather

kyrie07December 16, 2010

Our Craftsman 1/2 hp opener does not want to open after the temperature drops below 50 degrees. If you push on it a bit, it will then open. This is the second or third winter it has done this. Seems very peculiar, since it works fine in the summer. Can anyone help?

You may need to adjust the force. Force adjustment controls are located on the right side panel of the motor unit and regulate the amount of power required to open and close the door. Weather conditions can affect the door movement so you may need to occasionally make an adjustment. It appears that your door likes to be warm!!! (Hope this helps and keep us updated.)

I'd operate the door manually, disconnected from the trolly, to see if the door is sticking in the closed position or if the spring adjustment is out of balance.
