Help! What is this antique adjustable-height wooden chair for?

southpawgrammarOctober 14, 2010

We discovered this chair at a shop in Pittsboro, NC, for $33, labeled "Vintage Folding Chair." We have searched and searched online, but we cannot find anything like it.

As you can see from the linked photographs, it has a strange mechanism for raising and lowering (it appears to be for adjusting the height, not folding). Can anyone tell us what in the world this chair is for, where it may have come from, and what it's worth?

Very cute. I can't help, but you'll probably get an answer if you post this over on Antiques.
