paint a desk

kaybee01October 20, 2011

I have a desk that I bought quite a few years back and now the colour does not go with my livingroom and I want to paint the base but do not know what colour or type of paint to use. I think an espresso or some shade of brown would look best. Any suggestions?

Kaybee01: Depending on if this is a desk that would be of heirloom value would determine if it should be painted or not if it is a heirloom quality piece it should not be refininshed in anyway as this will decrease the future value. As far as colors go there are many options. Black is very popular now however I have not really seen brown as a paint color on furniture. Good luck.

Brushworks Spectacular Finishes

It's easy to paint it.

Preparation is the same for a desk as for a wall. Clean the surface and sand it dull. No matter what finish is on it today, it can be repainted.

1. Clean and sand it dull.
2. Fill any chips, dents, scrapes, etc., with spackling and sand when dry.
3. Prime it with bonding primer.
4. Apply two even coats of high quality acrylic enamel in your choice of color.
