How to determine what furniture is made of? It isn't wood...

betheighOctober 1, 2009

We bought a Bassett bedroom suite over a year ago that has a painted black finish. The furniture is not made from solid wood, I'm pretty sure, although the drawers are.

The reason why I don't think the surfaces are painted wood is because I scratched some edges on the chest of drawers and it doesn't look like wood. It looks kind of crumbly to me, but I don't know.

Anyway, what is this material and can I safely repair and re-paint this furniture without it looking like crap?

I really regret getting this cheap-o set. It is amazing what I've learned in the past year about purchasing furniture. Oh well.

Thanks for your help,

I have seen furniture made of all sorts of stuff -- MDF (medium density fiberboard, sort of sawdust and resin pressed together), particle board, with or without a veneer or laminate, plastic resin, plastic foam, plywood, oriented strand board (inside upholstered furniture).

You can probably repaint it, as the new stuff just needs to adhere to the old stuff. Chances are the old stuff is tinted lacquer, but every once in a while, I see something else.
