Unusual garage door keypad problem

mizmomSeptember 29, 2009

I am hoping someone can give us a clue to why our keypad refuses to open the garage door when the temperature drops below 50 F. We have a 15 year old Chamberlain garage door opener, I think the keypad is the same age but I am not 100% sure. No problems using the garage door opener from any location until about 2-3 years ago. When the outdoor temps drop below 50F, the keypad stops working. The backlight flashes, the opener works from the wall switch and the remotes but the keypad will not open the door. The battery is not the problem. It has been replaced multiple times. This means the keypad is basically useless all winter and then works again all summer.

I am guessing that the cooler temps cause some wiring to contract and loose a connection but do not know where to look.

Does anyone have any idea what to look for other than replacing the keypad?

Thank you to anyone with an idea,

It is very common for electronic parts to react to temperature changes. A refrigerant is sold in small cans to help technicians diagnose these problems. I don't think the price of a new keypad is worth the time and trouble for you to go this route but you could if you like. I would just replace that keypad if it is still available and be done with it. Availability is the key here for sure. Newer models will not work with your opener.
