Garage door in; need good opener

caroline94535September 10, 2010

Hi! I'm new here but have been on various KT forums for years and years. Now I need heavy-duty ideas.

We've just installed a new garage door. It's an insulated 10x7 steel door. Plain, basic model with no windows.

We have to get a new opener. DH is considering a 3/4 hp model from Menard's (similar to Lowe's).

Could someone offer suggestions as to a good, reliable, opener. We probaby don't need state-of-the-art, but we do want a good, sturdy opener that will last.

Is chain drive or belt drive better?

Thanks!

The main difference between chain and belt drives is the noise. The chain drive is pretty basic but the belt drive was engineered from the beginning to cut down on noise. I would choose it without hesitation. It is a little more expensive though.

I have two belt drives that replaced chains and wow there is no comparison. I would go belt drive without a doubt. I have liftmaster professionals that are one piece track units. The store units that are multi piece track are fine.

Chamberlain and liftmaster is my choice after having craftsman.
