steel garage door questions

drag_racerAugust 15, 2006

Going to replace my wood door with a steel door. After getting several quotes, I'm more confused than when I started. Each dealer out here recommends different brands - I have quotes with Amarr, Overhead, Clopay, Wayne Dalton, Doortech, etc.. Concerning brands, is Doortech a good brand? Are steel doors heavier than wood doors? Is a 1/3 hp garage door opener strong enough? Should I go with 1/2 hp openers? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

I'll not get into the door question because as you might have realized each dealer recommends what they carry. But we get to the opener. If the door is properly installed and maintained, the horse power of the opener is not that important. I think the half horse power opener is better for the average home owner because they do not maintain their doors.

Thanks for the reply. We currently have a 1/3 hp liftmasters with our wood rollup door. They've worked great over the years and are very easy for me to maintain(I've replaced the nylon gear in one of them). That's why I asked about the weight and whether I need to upgrade or not. I'd prefer not to - to save some money and because I'm somewhat familiar with the innards, lol. Thanks again for the reply!
