Garage Door Jerking when Going down

elroyyboyJuly 26, 2010

We just had a new garage door installed (complete exterior remodel). We replaced a 30 year old Masonite door with a new double steel sided insulated door from Lowes. We love the door.

The door tracks very smoothly going up. I have inspected the gears inside the opener and they're ok. However, when going down, the linkage which connects the door to the trolley "sways" and the garage door doesn't move until the arm (attached to the linkage) pushes the top of the door. The linkage is an l shaped bracket which attaches to the straight metal rod which attaches to the trolley.

Are there more than one type of bracket w/ a garage door opener? We left the original opener (it was still working) and used the same linkage.

I know this is difficult to understand and apologize in advance for the confusing post.

The door spring may be tensioned too tight.
When disconnected from the drive mechanism, does the door open by itself and/or is there resistance when you pull it down to close it?
