Reupholster or Replace Chaise

chisueAugust 21, 2011

The 1990-ish Kindell chaise in our master bedroom needs new covering AND its' springs re-tied. I also have a small Baker club chair and ottoman that need frame-up work -- or replacing.

I'm hung up on whether to repair or buy new. I'm north of Chicago. We are also Seniors, so having something last 'forever' is less important. lol This is mostly a question of cost.

It all depends. If the piece has good "bones" (frame and suspension), you will probably end up with a better piece than what you can buy new. And you have a wide open selection of fabric. You can also do subtle style changes, if desired.

Before the local store closed, I did their repair work for what is/was considered one of the premium brands. I was fairly shocked at some of the interior construction and cost-cutting measures, even on a $12K sofa.

Custom upholsterers will generally take more care during upholstery in terms of padding, tailoring, fit, and pattern matching than a piece-work factory.

But you won't generally save a ton of money. For example, don't expect re-upholstery to be half the cost of a new piece made in China. But for the money, I believe you'll get a better piece.

Here is a link that might be useful: why reupholster?

Thanks for your reply. I'm still torn. Guess I should go out and price some new furniture and get bids. I know I won't get the Kindell or Baker quality, but maybe I could get something OK that would last us enough years.

we just bought a chaise lounge for $560

We also just had cushions replaced on another chair ,a glider-rocker.
The cushions ( 2) were $40 for materials, and the microsuede fabric on the cushions for $40/ yd., the webbing was replaced, then there was labor. The finished cost of redoing the cushions exceeded the purchase price of this amish oak chair. However- we like the chair and wanted to keep it. How comfy is this chair to you?
