painting maple furniture

amycjAugust 29, 2009

I'm not sure the best forum to post this question, but I'll start here. In my oldest ds's room he has two pieces of bedroom furniture that are maple w/ a high gloss finish. I would like to paint both a dark navy. Here's my question...where do I begin? I've never taken on a project like this. I'm assuming I need to strip away the gloss finish, but I'm not sure what product I need to do that? And what application method would be best for painting the furniture? I would appreciate any tips one can offer and thank you in advance. :-)

If you must paint then.............. :)
No need to strip. Clean. Sand lightly. Get off all dust, etc. Prime with a good primer. Since you're going dark, I would suggest getting the primer tinted. Paint. At least 2 coats. First one brush. Second coat, use a sponge roller on flat surfaces. Finish up with a satin poly finish (unless you want a gloss). Not hard (cuz it that was the case I wouldn't know how to do it;) ). Have fun!
