Making wood floor less glossy

philodogApril 28, 2011

I put in a beautiful Moabi hardwood floor and used a satin waterbased polyurethane but for whatever reason, maybe I didn`t stir the cans well enough, the satin is more like semi-gloss. It looks great but shows dirt, dust, streaks, etc way too much. Is there a way to chemically or physically dull the shine slightly without resanding and recoating? Maybe buffing it with a very, very light abrasive?

Some old timers used to buff oil base gloss poly with steel wool to lessen the sheen. I do not see how you could keep the sheen level even as applying pressure evenly is very difficult.
Then again if you have gone so far as to abrade it why not put on the right sheen level?
