Does anyone know what this is?

This thing is mounted in the garage and the attic of a townhouse that we are renovating to sell. It is mounted on a crossbeam in both the attic and garage. The dimension are approximately 10" x10". Behind the left wing is a horn. It appears to be some type of siren but I have no idea what is it for or how it works. Any ideas?

Looks like one of the heat-activated alarms that used small pressurized Freon containers to blow the horn. Unbelievably high priced, sold by door-to-door salespeople. The horn works with compressed air if you wish. Unbelievably loud at 100 PSI.
