Common grade oak ok if staining?

A3ERYOUApril 9, 2013

Hello,

I am interested in putting hardwood oak floor on my floor. I have every intention of using a dark walnut stain on the floor and I was wondering if I can get by with common 1 or common 2 grade in place of select hardwood if I'm staining a dark walnut color?

Thanks

Common will have knots and lots of color/graining variation. The dark stain will mask some of this, but not all. If you're good knowing this at the outset, you should be fine. If not, I would fork out the extra $$ to get what you want.

Hope this helps!
