Q2: Which GDO??

cciaffoneFebruary 27, 2009

OK, given that my aged Craftsman GDO is getting strange,

and that the logic-board relay that drives the garage

lights has failed, help me find a replacement.

I can replace it with another Craftsman chain-drive

GDO with 2 in-car buttons, one keyless-entry button,

and the wired button. I understand and can fix most

of the "adjustment" probs with this unit. I know

it pretty well.

For a bit more I can get a Genie screw-drive unit with

the same button options. I know nothing about how

this unit works and prob-solving would start at

square 1.

I see tons o' questions about Sears probs, but almost

none about Genie probs. Is this significant??

Chamberlain Mfg Co makes Craftsman, Liftmaster and Chamberlain openers. They also make some that are branded for large customers. I personally prefer Chamberlain but there is so little difference between the three it is up for grabs. Sears is now also selling Genie so you could probably go there and compare them. The Chamberlain line of openers is DIY friendlier and is easier to repair. Hope this helps you.

Thanks Don. I will probably stick with a Chamberlain
based product.

Any preferences for chain vs screw drive?? I am
way less worried about noise (just storage over
the garage) than I am about operation and reliability.

I would go with the chain drive for the same reason. It is easier to repair.

Thanks again.

Last question (I hope):

Am I better buying the Craftsman branded Chamberlain
from Sears, or the Chamberlain brand from my local
Tru-Value hardware?
