Craftsman garage opener and cold weather

michaeltJanuary 5, 2008

My Craftsman opener for the second winter in a row has begun to act erratically once the temperature is below about 30F for any length of time. The garage is a separate building. The opener opens the door without any activation, closes it part way or opens it half way, all without activation from remotes or wall buttons, etc. In warm weather the opener works perfectly. Any ideas? I've checked the photo eye alignement, grease on the door tracks, etc., and all seem to be OK.

There shouldn't be any grease on the door tracks. I would suspect the wall control or the wiring to the control. You can eliminate both of these by removing the wall control wiring at terminals 1 and 2 on the motor unit. Be sure not to remove the wires coming from the door sensors or your door won't close. If this doesn't eliminate the problem you must have a bad logic board.

It sounds like the wiring for the push button is shorting out. If you can't find the short, try re-stapling the wires to the push button. Make sure you staple them in different places.
