New hardwood install - what to do woth baseboard?

numbersjunkieApril 29, 2013

We are having oak hardwood installed in our sunken living room - to replace carpet. One contractor who came to do an estimate said the baseboard will look funny if they add shoe molding since only a small area of it will show. Should be pull off the baseboard before they install and then put in new baseboard afterwards?

Well my question would be... how high is the flooring 5/8" 3/4"? Is this true hard wood? Or a laminate? What will happen to any doors you have in the room once the floor is down. What under the carpet now as subfloor? Rule of thumb is bassboard should always come off when a new floor gets installed unless you want shoe molding or a quarter round molding.

We replaced carpet with 3/4" hardwood several years ago. We tore out the old baseboard and labelled everything, so we could put it back in (but a little higher) after the hardwood was installed.
