Laminate vs engineered?

jxbrownMarch 21, 2012

We've made an offer on a house that needs a lot of work. I'm trying to make some basic decisions so I can put together a budget. We don't like carpet (it even has carpet in the bathrooms -- ew!). It's a tri-level. I'd like to put hardwood on the upper floors, but the ground level master is on a slab. The dogs will probably be using that room for access to the yard. Would an engineered hardwood or a laminate be better? Some of the new laminates are pretty nice looking.

Laminates are fake and will not raise the value of the home. But, in an active household....there appearance will hold up much better than a real hardwood. Real woods will abrase very easily and people need to know that. Laminates will not and will stay looking nice much longer in certain environments.
