Refinishing Oak Flooring

jimgioiaMarch 26, 2011

I have oak flooring in the kitchen. There are spots under the refrigerator that apppear to be water damaged. There are also some scratches in the floor. The flooring itself appears to have a clear coat over it as there is a shine to it.

My question is: If I would like to refinish the floor, can I sand the clearcoat finish or do I need to chemically strip it 1st, then sand the wood underneath.

A drum sander is used to remove the old finish back to bare wood before refinishing.

They are large, heavy (2 man lift), and take some skill to not tear the floor up in use (the drum must never sit in one place on the floor, even when starting and stopping or it WILL gouge badly).

Edge sanders are used against walls, and hand scraping in the last bit of the corners.

It is usually a two person job since loading, unloading, and getting the drum sander into the house two people.

One person then can start on the edges while the other runs the drum sander.
