Bi-cast Leather vs Naugahyde

jo1972May 17, 2009

I have been reading that BI-CAST leather is not durable. Would NAUGAHYDE be more durable on furniture?

Bi-Cast is not real leather. It is a synthetic made from leather scraps, bonded to a polypropylene sheet. It has no durability because it lacks the fibers of real leather.

Naughahyde is vinyl. And like all vinyl, it comes in various grades and thicknesses. Depends on how well its constructed.

Real, genuine leather is the most durable.

Either one would most likely last forever because no one ever want to sit on it!

Actually Naugahyde (in most grades) is extremely durable. Some of the finishes are pretty decent too, and it is used a lot in restaurant/hospitality. It stains less than leather and doesn't dry out so it is probably more durable than leather by some standards --although leather pantinas nicely, if it is good hide.

Personally I would rather sit on good naugahyde than a poorly tanned and spray dyed genuine but inferior hide, which I think often smells like dead fish:)
