Resurface hearth ledge

dowbrightNovember 28, 2012

We have a fireplace in our new house that has hideous stains (soot, I believe) on the hearth ledge. We've tried everything we can think of to get them off, but it's only dulled the look of the stone. (It's now a gas fireplace.)

What material can I use to resurface that ledge? I know nothing about these kind of things, and am at a loss. I have clear glass trays that I love to set there for a place to set drinks for the two chairs that will flank the fireplace, but the stains show through. Bummer!

(There are also soot stains on the fireplace itself, but they don't bother me as muchbut if you know of a solution, I'm all ears.)

I appreciate any help. :)
