Fireplace Insert Questions

tmartelNovember 17, 2011

I was hoping someone could answer some of my questions.

1. I'd like a fireplace insert that is very good at convective heating without the need for a blower. Are any specific brands or models noted for this?

2. It'd be nice to have unit not flush for the sake of radiating heat, but how hot do the sides get? Pain to the touch, or 3rd degree burn to the touch? Does it vary? I wouldn't mind an insert very hot on top, but cooler on the sides.

3. Most inserts seem to be square or rectangular in shape. My fireplace is fully brick, and has an arched top. Am I out of luck? The arched part juts out about an inch from the rest of the brick wall.

Virtually all inserts are set up to make convective heat. Most of them will tell you that a blower is required so as to not overheat the stove. But Pacific Energy is the only brand I know which can be run effectively without a blower and with little risk of damaging the stove, (note attached link).

You can touch the outer shell of most convection type stoves but the top will always be hot, close to 3rd degree. With regard to the arch, some inserts which have slightly arched surrounds, e.g. the Pacific Energy Alderlea T5. I don't think this would be a deal breaker since it is likely that the surround would cover up most of the arch.

Good luck
