wood mantel over fieldstone?

dab07November 7, 2011

I've got a (non-functional) fieldstone fireplace surround that I like, but it's got too rustic/antique of a look for the house. I'm considering putting a wood mantel over it, with a large "reveal", letting at least 7" of the fieldstone show. The mantel would be a simple, painted one, in an attempt to tone the fireplace down, minimizing its Early American character. (It's not a true antique, I built it 20 years ago.)

I've seen lots of pictures of wooden mantels on brick and tile fireplaces, but never on fieldstone. Does anyone have any pictures of one? Or have an opinion as to whether it's a good (or bad) idea?

If I can figure out how, I'll post a picture tomorrow. Thanks for your help.

Since you obviously like your wooden mantel, I would try using that over the fieldstone first. It may be a very interesting look. If you do not like the look, you can remove the mantel then cover the fieldstone reveal with durrock. Tile over the durrock with marble tiles or decorative tiles (depending on your decorating theme). Replace the mantel and you will have a much more formal looking fireplace.

Be sure to cover the hearth to match the surround. If your hearth happens to be a just a few inches high (a trip hazard), replace it with a hearth that is flush with the rest of the floor.
