Fireplace remodel

teecarOctober 19, 2011

We currently have a brick fireplace that takes up the entire wall in family room. We would like to remove the hearth completely. The hearth comes out 2 1/2 feet into the room (much wasted space). And it is a little over a foot high. My husband wants to install a rather large tv above the mantle. Is it possible to lower the fireplace opening and lower the mantle to give us more room above the mantle? Do you know the distance the mantle has to be from the fireplace opening?

Thanks for your help,

Tanya

We are getting ready to do the same thing to our fireplace. Our stone mason came and looked and actually suggested removing the hearth which we have decided to do. We are putting in new floors so the newly exposed area will not be an issue. He also said we could lower the firebox opening (which is still under consideration) so both things you want to do are very possible.

I have no info about mounting the TV - sorry.
