Do I need sand for gas fireplace?

sanitystreamOctober 21, 2007

I'm renting a house with two natural-gas fireplaces (vented).

Somebody told me I should put sand in them before I use them. Why? Do I need this?

If so, should the sand over the pipe where the gas comes out underneath the log? This pipe appears to have several holes in it. Is it okay to cover it with sand?

Are you burning real wood or is this a gas log set?

It's a gas log set.

yeah, its been a while since I used gas logs, but I believe gas log sets usually come with embers and sand. Also, you should be able to purchase these items separately at any fp store.

The sand helps distribute the flame along with the embers they add realism to your fire.
