are latex beds 'green'?

ilmbgMarch 17, 2009

I wonder about the outgassing of any latex bed- as latex is made from a petroleum product I believe.

What do you know?

I also saw the unhappy posts about Bragada- seems that that store/brand is not in good standing with many people.

Latex is not a petroleum product.

In its purest form it comes from rubber trees in Thailand and other SE Asia countries. A 100% natural latex bed is expensive however, so its more common to see a mixture of pure latex and synthetic latex in ratios such as 70/30 for the build.

Synthetic latex is made by polymerizing a monomer that has been emulsified with surfactants.

Royal Pedic makes a 100% natural latex organic mattress under their ORGANIC line (not their standard line). It's as green as it can be, no man-made material in it.

Also latex will outlast the best polyurethane foam many times over.
