Rookie gas fireplace question

attar14September 22, 2013

I just bought a house and it has a gas fireplace with no logs. Do I need logs to have a fire or is it possible that they never had logs but rather had a " hot coals " kind of look? (There are remnants of a hot coals look but maybe that is what goes under the logs). Either way, I'm lost and could use a little help. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
