choosing a new cook/heating stove

suzy44August 12, 2009

Hi, I'm new to Gardenweb and think I'll love it.

Our fireplace is pretty large, with a 24" deep hearth that is 5' in length or six,

and the space between the hearth to the top of the firebox is 32". We want a woodburning stove to sit on the hearth that will not only heat a 35x18 room but boil water in a kettle. It needs a pipe to come out the back and run up the chimney. We looked at a Hearthstone Craftsbury but the top was so small, slick and sloped downward. The enamel would scratch and/or chip with a cast iron frypan on top but may not be able to avoid this.

We want a non-catalytic stove. The Napoleon's look great, the Hearthstones nice but not quite as good.

Any ideas? TIA!! suzy

I would do a google search of "cast iron stove" and "soapstone stove." That should increase your chances of finding something that will work for you.
