Need ideas for fireplace mantle design

Northwoodswi_markJune 7, 2005

Hi, I am building a chalet in Northern Wisconny and I am getting close to having to decide what I want to do with the fireplace. Right now the whole chase is outside, so the inside is framed flat with the walls on either side, I was going to build out the fireplace chase on the inside all the way to the ceiling and use lick and stick cultured stone, but I have already mounted two recessed lights for illumination above the fireplace and I do not want to have to move them. I am looking for pics of rustic looking fireplaces that are built out on the lower part, then from above the mantle it would be even with the surrounding walls. Any Ideas. The cathederal wall peaks at 22 feet.

I will be visiting a fireplace "store" soon also.

Some of the fireplace manufacturer web sites have photo galleries -- you might try them. Here's a link to Fireplace Xtrordinair's. HearthNet.com also has one. Good luck!
