An unusual fireplace question

downsouthJanuary 17, 2014

When it rains, I know it from the rain hitting the fireplace and making a pinging sound. We've been here 16 years, don't have any leaks. Is this normal and what exactly is the rain hitting? We have two fireplaces and it happens to both fireplaces. One is a woodburning and the other is gas logs. In case you're wondering, we have a new roof.

Do you have a metal spark cap on the fireplaces?

metal spark cap or, often, if you have pre-fab fireplaces w/ wooden (sided) chases, there's a sheet metal cap on the chase that tends to do this. It's very common and not a problem.

I don't know if we have a metal spark cap or if they are pre-fab. Little help I am, lol. We had this house built in 1996.

I'm glad to hear that it's very common and no problem, as I actually like the rain pinging sound.

Thanks, Dee
