odor from natural vent gas coal fireplace

Hello all -- we live in a 1918 bungalow that was originally built with coal-burning fireplaces. We have retro-fit two of the fireplaces with vent-less gas coal baskets (they look like coal, but burn gas) -- and even though they are ventless units, we vent them through the existing fireplace chimneys (which we had relined). These do not produce an odor but the flames have alot of blue in them and don't look as realistic as we had hoped. Recently, we added a third gas coal basket to another fireplace. This time we decided to go with a direct vent unit in the hopes that the flames would look more realistic (they do) but it has an odor -- similar to what a true ventless unit would produce. any ideas why? Is it not drafting correctly? Do these units just produce an odor? is this what the initial "burnoff" smell could be? Thanks for any advice or ideas, Tina

I recently installed a direct vent fireplace in my basement and am also experiencing a "burn off" odor. The flames start out mostly blue when cold but develope into a nice natural flame in 10-15 minutes. At first the odor was fairly strong but it has diminished. I have probably run the fireplace a total of 16-18 hours and it still produces some odor. I am hopeing that it will eventually go away completely. Any experienced input on this would be appreciated.
