Gas Fireplace Brands

Anyone have any intelligence on replacing a gas fireplace?

We currently have a B-vent FMI-850, circa 1992. We are in relatively temperate VA, and are limited to a smaller size like 36 inch, maybe 42, so it will not be a primary source of heat.

We went to a fireplace store and it seems to be a total choose the look that you like and trust us to do the rest.

Anyone heard of Kingsman, a Canadian company?

How about Heatilator?

Or do you kind of go with a more well known brand (not necessarily in fireplaces, but HVAC) like Lennox?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hello! We live in Colorado. We built our(one level w/basement) home 2 yrs. ago and have a Heat&Glo on the main floor. We are finishing the basement and are adding another Heat&Glo(6000CLX). We, obviously are very happy with this brand. It does kick out a good amount of heat but you can adjust the fan inside also. I wish you luck in your search.

We have a Jotul direct vent gas insert. They are made in Norway and assembled in New England somewhere. We're very pleased with it.

If you go with a direct vent system, which is the most fuel efficient (those that are not direct vent send most of the heat up the chimney), make sure you get the remote thermostat, which is usually an option at extra cost. But it's worth the money because it keeps the temperature steady.

Unfortunately, Consumer Reports does not rate the brands of these system, although they do publish an article of general advice about them. I would go with a brand that has been around for a while that makes a unit that you like the appearance of. The other thing to consider is the competence of the installer. Some of these things are a bit complicated, and you want an installer you can really have confidence in. The only way to identify a good installer is to ask around.

The other thing to consider is the local building codes. You want to make sure you are not in violation.
