Repair of Magnavox 30MW5405 shutting itself off / no picture
So my TV died last month ... made a shorting sound, then the picture went blank, though the sound still came through. After a few minutes, however, the TV turned itself off. Trying to turn it back on only lit up the front green light for a minute or two, then it shut itself off again.
Anyway, after much investigation I solved the problem myself. The problem was a blown high voltage capacitor near the horizontal deflection coil. It wasn't melted but slightly swollen.
The capacitor in question was in slot #2418 and was 330nF (0.33uF), 5% tolerance, 250v, metalized polypropylene.
If anyone else has this problem, keep this capacitor in mind. Got a replacement from Dayton Audio for less than $5, shipping included! Beats a $200 repair!!!
