philips tp2784 picture goes black

Hi,

I have a Philips TP2784 which has had an interesting problem since we bought it many years ago. The picture is fine for an arbitrary amount of time, but then suddenly goes black. However, if you turn the volume up or down, then you can see the correct picture inside the volume letters and bars, which are usually yellow. It is as if the TV gets confused about what is picture and what is supposed to be masked.

The only way to fix this problem is to turn the TV off for about 10 seconds, then turn it back on. *Usually* the picture is then fine.

The TV started behaving this way shortly after we bought it. We had the Philips repair man out several times, and he finally replaced the main processor. The TV behaved itself until it was well out of warranty. It then occasionally blacked out. It has suddenly taken a turn for the worse and is blacking out about ten to fifteen times a day.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Unfortunately it sounds like the video processor chip is at fault once again. This is a nasty chip to change as it has something like 40 pins on it and is soldered in. It's possible he did a lousy soldering job and the results of that are now being seen due to thermal stress as it warms up. The processor chip is fortunately cheap, it sells for a dealer net of between $ 10-15 but putting it in properly really calls for a vacuum desoldering station, which is an expensive tool which not every repair facility has. In any case, I don't think there's any solution other than either resoldering the chip pins or replacing it.
