I have read that its important to plan ahead. and I am never good at doing this.
does anyone plan well and can offer some tips to get started .
What I do is plan a day at a time. And I keep track of it all on Fitday. I simply add what I want to the menu until I have added the calories, carbs etc that I am able to have for the day. Then I tweak it to suit me.

This isn't what I do myself (wife does the cooking) but there is a menu planning tool on the USDA web site. See link.
You can enter your menu and it will calculate the calories for you, as well as the percentage of the recommended servings of the various food groups.
