Cost of Cat-5 wiring

heimertAugust 1, 2007

We're renovating and have a lot of walls open. I plan to have cat-5 (well, cat-6 now) wiring put in to each room, as well as coax, with a home run to the basement for a panel.

What kind of rough cost should I expect? Obviously each job is different, but this is approx 3000 sq ft. house, 3 stories, fairly opened up. Are we talking $100 per outlet, $300? Washington DC area.

If the walls are already open why not do it yourself? 1000' of CAT 5 is ~$80 at home depot. Jacks are less than $10 each. If you can easily access your basement and attic, the walls really don't even need to be open to run the cable easily. There are good books in the library that give instruction on how to do this. All the tools and most of the parts you need can be purchased at home depot.

If you really don't want to DIY, I would give a couple of alarm installers calls and ask them to quote it for you. These guys can easily handle the job.
