GE TV shuts down

davencJuly 4, 2009

I have a 31" standard TV (31GT660YX3) that shuts down after about 3 hours. I have had no issues with this unit until now. After it fails, it will not power up with the remote or pwr button no fromt of set. After about 30 minutes, it allows me to power it up but it only stays on about 20-30 minutes then fails again. When it powers up, it comes on at channel 3 instead of the channel it was on at failure. I feel no extra heat or smells from the set at failure. Any thoughts on this? It sounds like a heat problem but I am lost in electronics.

Yes, I believe you have a thermal problem in the power supply. It could affect the standby voltage supply which supplies power to the remote control circuits. You could remove the back cover and carefully look in the power supply section for any component that has discolored the mainboard on which it is mounted or any discoloration indicting a component that is or being subjected to excessive heat. Another way of troubleshooting is to spray Freeze-Mist or Component Cooler on suspected components to see if it can locate which component is on the brink of total failure. You can buy these at Radio Shack.
