Microphone Cable

randy427May 12, 2013

I'm making a short mic cable from components and ended up with a cable configuration that I haven't used before. It's a three wire cable with only the white conductor shielded (I'm used to two conductors with the shield around both).
For a three-pin XLR connector, would I connect the shield to GND, white to 1 and red and black to 2 and 3?
It's just a short lead for the pulpit mic but we also use some wireless equipment and could be susceptable to interference.
TIA

Mic cable is cheap, it's hardly worth screwing around with a DIY..

This cable has to snake through a tight space where the connector cannot feed. It should also have in-wall insulation, which OTS cables do not.

Are both ends of the cable balanced XLR connectors, or is one end an XLR and the other end an unbalanced 1/4" connector?

Both are 3-pin XLR.

Pin 1 should be the shield/ground. While pins 2 and 3 would both typically be shielded, in this case, I would run the white shielded conductor as pin 2 and the other unshielded conductor as pin 3.

Hope it all works out. If not, post back and I'm sure I can help you get it figured out.
