Are all cable tv splitters and amps the same?

fastbackApril 25, 2005

I was wondering if all splitters and amplifiers were the same? What to look for when purchasing them and what to stay away from.

My Comcast installer said not to use the junk they sell at Radio Shack. He gave me one for my digital cable to split between cable modem and another TV. It's a Genesys II 2-Way Splitter and says 5-1000 Mhz, -130 dB RFI. Each of the outlets from the splitter are labeled -3.5 dB. Does anyone know what specifically to look for. I remember reading about them in the past, and there are certain ones good for cable or satellite.

The ones for satellite that go on the cable from the dish are very special swithces not really splitters.

The ones I like to use for cable TV use are the Ideal brand ones sold by Home Depot and Lowes. They're identical (except for the label) to the ones the cable company uses, with a soldered..not glued..backplate.
