Question re using quotations in needlework

stitchno.5June 4, 2009

Hello, embroiderers. I am interested in using quotations (from a poem, song, etc.) in a piece of embroidery. If I credit the original author with the quotation, is it legal to do this? To obtain permission and/or pay royalties(!) would be impossible for me, so I am wondering if it is sufficient to simply credit the author within the embroidered piece. Thank you in advance for your help!

There's a great explanation of this same problem on the old google answers site:

Go with old quotes that are no longer under copyright (70 years old), federal employee quotes, or quotes that don't originate from a single identifiable source, such as turns of phrase or jokes.
