Digital TV conversion date, etc.

zzeasyFebruary 4, 2007

Son picked up a cheap 14" TV and noticed it had a sticker on the side regarding the Feb. 2009 digital TV signal implementation. After that happens, will you need a converter device even if you have cable tv service? Also, how does this effect VCR's? Will "old" VCR's still work OK? Hope this hasn't been beaten to death on this forum but I did a quick search and couldn't find anything specivic to VCR's.

This subject was touched on here earlier. All TVs and VCRs, if they have a regular tv tuner built in, sold in the US after February 28 2007, must have a digital tuner built in. Same thing goes for DVD recorders.

Those old VCRs will still play your tapes. But, they WON'T be able to record off from an antenna without a converter box.

Many manufacturers have already discontinued making VCRs.

Some will make VCRs that won't have a tuner in it.

Some will make a VCR that has a digital tuner in it and will convert the signal to a VCR compatible analog signal.
