You should have the chimney checked, the bird removed and a protective cover installed if your chimey does not have one. Many times birds will fly into a open chimney and cannot get out. This is dangerous as the bird can form a block and and cause your furnace or fireplace to malfunction, and generate carbon monoxide fumes.

Yup, I think calling in a professional is called for in this case.

I had a bird fly into my house via a dryer vent and get stuck in the hose behind the dryer. You could hear the poor thing banging around in there. I called in a pest control company and they caught it and removed it back into the wild. Then I had the builder come out and fix the vent so it would function properly and close when not in use.

You have to be careful how you seal up these openings to prevent gasses from coming back into the house, especially with a chimney, as Iggie said.
