French Door - in Door Icemakers

simancoDecember 14, 2012

I think our 29 year old fridge is finally dying after a bit of a reprieve earlier in the year.

It is a 41" wide model so I'm very used to wide refrigerator shelves and am looking at French door models with ice and water in the door. Most of these models have the icemaker inside the refrigerator compartment, taking up my precious shelf space. I've found a couple that have an in-door icemaker. What does everyone think?

Whirlpool is releasing models in the Whirlpool, KA and Maytag lines that have an in-door icemaker. Apparently they have a Lowes-only model that is already out.

You can see the KitchenAid version here:

LG also has a model or two with an in-door icemaker. Plus the models they make for Sears under the Kenmore name.

LG here:

Does anyone have either of these? Or comments/thoughts on them? I really like the idea of reclaiming the shelf space by moving the icemaker to the door ...

Any and all thoughts / comments / critiques would be great!

Thank you,

I have seen both of those and didn't care for them. I really dislike the water dispenser on the LG. A friend has one, and its a pain since you have to fit cups under the lip, and water easily gets on the floor.

But a couple months ago I saw the new GE Profile and liked it the best. I'm waiting until next spring to see what their counter-depth version will be like.
