Does smooth top electric ranges = induction?

svperezDecember 2, 2012

I'm just starting to warm up to the idea of induction after reading many of its benefits that suit our family needs well. So I am out on the web pricing shopping but I don't see the name induction on any of the electric smooth top models. Should the description specifically reference induction cooking?

Thanks,
Sharon

Should the description specifically reference induction cooking? Absolutely. Smooth-top units are not all induction.

ITYM "most smooth top units are not induction"?

To the OP: if you want induction you also need to avoid "hybrid" models which combine induction and non-induction burners in a single unit.

Also be aware (which I am sure you are) that you'll need magnetic cookware. Lots of brands have lines that will work, but knowing the difference helps.

Good place to get a quick start on pricing is to Google: "Sears usa induction" and review the sub categories.

Don't be surprised at a lack of product on display in stores.

Also see "theinductionsite.com"

Go to ajmadison.com and put 'induction' in the search box. You will get mind boggling info.

Don't forget Ikea which has a nice $1k induction cooktop with a 5 year warranty.
