Great room- ceiling

lniaNovember 14, 2011

Hello,

We Are currently working with an architect on our home and would like your opinion on great room ceiling. Our great room will have an overlook from the second floor. We understand that 2 story great room works better with an overlook but we are considering a vaulted ceiling instead. Thoughts?

Thank you!

An overlook like a Juliet balcony, or something larger?

How high is your ceiling? What style is your home?

Our great room is cathedral (some call it vaulted) and peaks at 22 feet. Cedar beams. No Juliet balcony, no overlook.

Colonial home. Overlook is about 15 feet long....the width of family room. Not sure if this is a Juliet.

No, a Juliet is usually 6-ish feet.

Should have asked what area is in the overlook space. imo, the thing about them is sound travels up to bedrooms so privacy is lacking. And vice versa when teenagers have overnight guests.

if you do the vaulted ceiling will you close off the overlook?

Hi. So it appears the overlook is 10 feet from the 2nd floor. It looks down on the family room. Our architect had said vaulted may look odd because the eyes tendency to look straight ahead and the fact that one would just see the low wall. We prefer vaulted though due to the fact that noise and heating costs are minimized.
