American Range oven

mahatmacat1December 16, 2012

We've had an American 30" Range since 2008, purchased at Dvorsons and shipped to us up in PDX. We've had progressively worse performance from the oven in the past, esp. the past few months when it would groan every time the gas came on, until we discovered *the night before Thanksgiving* , that the oven wouldn't start at all. When we opened the door after several minutes, we couldn't smell any gas at all.

DH read that when the are groaning problems, it is usually the igniter, but we can't find anything online about fixing it, can't find where to get parts, and it's out of warranty. We're generally used to fixing our own appliances (we fixed the last stove we had and got several more years out of it) and specifically picked American because it didn't have a lot of unnecessary features like self-clean that could break down and cause problems.

Does anyone have any experience with this kind of problem? Thanks in advance...

Short answer is "no," but have you tried contacting American?

Google "Youtube Repair Gas Range".
There are lots of good tips.

Thanks for your replies, Detective & laat2. DH has done a lot of research on youtube but hasn't found anything that relates to our specific oven configuration there or on the net generally. He's a tech guy (and a pretty darn good bike mechanic and DIYer in general), so he's good at finding information online. The links you offered, Detective, we've seen--thanks.

The reason we haven't contacted American Range, actually, is that we didn't want to be put through what we've read other people have gone through when they have reported problems. We just wanted to get it fixed and not hope for weeks that they'll call back, deny the situation, charge us loads of money for someone to come out and just diagnose the problem, then *have to come back* sometime, maybe, if ever, with the replacement parts. No one in the residential market has had good experiences to share. DH has also read that they'll only deal with professional technicians, that the parts are very hard to get. Basically, I've read nothing good about American Range customer service...I guess if we have to, we'll try that route but I'm not expecting very much.

We just want the darn range fixed before the entire holiday season is shot. Although I must say, grill-smoking the turkey in our charcoal Weber was a *treat* that will become the standard for Thanksgivings from here on : )

Can you enlist Dvorsons and forward these two threads to them? There should be some way for them to support their products, warranty or not.

It is more than likely that your 30" oven ignition system mostly consists of generic parts. You might explore that first to see if you can identify them by their "real" part numbers on the installed items or other characteristics given on appliance parts ordering sites like Sears Parts, A P Wagner etc.
Oven ignitor systems sometimes start aging and failing more often sometime in a 5-10 year window so maintenance expense is to be expected. If you don't like the American Range official service people, check around for someone else.
