Will a KA panel ready fridge look wonky recessed in drywall?

cscowNovember 7, 2012

Hi! I have done a lot of research on GW and understand the difference between panel ready, built in, & integrated refrigerators. While I love the look of the integrated and built in's they are all too tall for my space and too expensive unless I can find a floor model. I currently have a FD refrigerator recessed into drywall. It stands alone on the wall and does not have a cabinet or counter next to it. The cutout in the drywall is 28.5" deep,, 36" wide & 75" tall. I am looking at the KA panel ready French door refrigerator and was wondering if I pushed it back flush with the drywall would the doors open? I called KA and they say yes, but I am not too confident as most of the panel ready KA's I see have a 2" black strip showing on the side. Thank you for your help.

Usually the refrigerator gets about 1/4 to 1/2 in wider on both sides when the door is opened due to the pivot point of the hinge. I would go to an appliance store and check the model for this to see if it is true on the model you want.
