old national

Gardenseed73March 18, 2013

Hello, I have a pressure canner that my grandmother used years ago. Its says on the lid national pressure cooker Eau Claire Wis 18.. Im trying to find out if this cooker is suppose to have a rubber seal or is it gasketless.. Im not sure what the 18 stands for.. I would love to start using the cooker if I can make sure its safe to use.. Any information that you could give me would be appreciated. Also would like some information on how to get started canning. I loved grandmas dill pickles and would love to have the knowledge to make my own. thanks..

I've seen two kinds of old nationals. There's the gasketless one with the bolts that secure the lid and there's one with a twist to lock lid that requires a gasket.

I am looking at getting a gasketed one because it's the most like my old Presto 4 quart which I am familiar with and find easy to use.

I decided on old rather than new for my big pressure cooker because they seem heavier and more well made. It's also easy to find gaskets and over-pressure plugs for them too.
