Kohler Underscore Tub Requiring 26" Deck Height

MzKizDecember 26, 2013

We have purchased the Kohler Underscore 66 x 32" soaking tub for our Master Bath remodel. Our contractor has told us that the deck height will need to be 26" as the installation requires 4" clearance from the floor and this tub is 22" deep. The tub is not boxed in by walls - the shower glass is on one end and built in shelving is at the other end.

We had really wanted to avoid putting in a step up to the tub due to the risk of slipping but with a deck height of 26", it seems like a step would be necessary.

Any ideas/opinions as to whether we need a step up to the deck surround and if so, what would be the safest step height and/or design?

Thanks for the help!

Steps are dangerous.

It is safer to sit on the deck, swivel your tush, get one foot into the tub, keep rotating around, get your second foot in, keep rotating until your knees are over your feet and then stand up. Install grab bars. Use the reverse process to get out of the tub.

Accidents occur when folks STEP in and out of bathtubs.
