How to convert tub to walkin shower

boops2012December 20, 2012

I'm currently considering changing out the tub in our condo. Its a 1 bed 1 and a half bath.Since a family wouldn't be using the space, and the population is growing older, an open shower makes more sense.
The contractor is giving me an estimate on rerouting the drain. But I thought I would ask if there are any shower pan setups that utilize the drain as is.The condo is on a second floor with concrete floors.

I imagine you could find something that would not require rerouting the drain. I'll post a link to a Kohler cast iron shower receptor that is shaped very much like a bathtub. But of course, this will depend on the size of your tub and drain configuration. I used a 3x4 Kohler cast iron receptor in my recent remodel, and like it a lot.

You can also find all sorts of acrylic shower bases and even some that come with doors - I've seen them on

Schluter makes a Kerdi shower tray that is meant to retrofit a tub to a shower.

The biggest question is what size is the existing drain?

Under the IRC a tub may have an 1-1/2" drain, while a shower is required to have a 2" drain.
