HOST file not blocking websites.

Pooh BearSeptember 11, 2008

I normally use the HOST file to block websites.

I entered a few websites on my son's computer

but when I when I tested them it still let me access them.

I tried running the nbstat -R command from the Run box.

I don't remember why I did that, read it somewhere I think.

Using the HOST file to block sites works fine on my computer.

But not on his. When I had his computer it worked fine for me.

But now that he has it (hand me down) it doesn't work.

What am I missing here. (besides brain cells).

Windows XP home edition sp2 + all updates (not sp3)

The first thing to try and I'm sure you have is a simple reboot. Also some firewalls can block the host file zone alarm being one anyway a few things to consider as we work through the issue.

The computer has been rebooted many times.
The only firewall is the Windows firewall.

I tried entering the sites into the Restricted Zone in IE
but that didn't work either. I could still access the sites.

I wonder what has changed on the pc since you owned it? What version of IE is on it.

Is this the windows host file or a special one you downloaded like mvps in the link below.

Here is a link that might be useful: host file

Before I turned over my computer to my son,
I wiped the hard drive clean and reinstalled Windows.
The same exact Windows XP the computer has always had.
It runs IE 7, same as my current computer.

The computer uses the Windows HOST file.
All I did was add the sites I want to block.
127.0.0.1 myspace.com
127.0.0.1 etc.

But I can still access those sites from his computer.
The method works fine on my new computer.
And when I had his computer it worked fine then too.
I can't think of anything that has changed.

I don't know that this will help, but I found this in my notes. The location of your hosts file is C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC, right?

Here's a shot in the dark flush the dns, see the link.

You may consider a better fire wall, I'm not sure what is wrong with the host file.

Is the host file blocking some sites and just haveing problems with a few?

Oooh, I figured out how to use Content Advisor to block sites.
I liked using the HOST file better, but this works for now.

Thanks.

you could try changing the hosts file to see if that made any differences that mvps one zep linked is an excellent choice.

If you wiped the pc and re-installed windows assuming it is xp have you checked to make sure it is getting and actually installing the windows updates? Because there is a bug that often causes it to no longer install windows updates when repaired and re-installed. You might want to go to the actual windows update site and check to make sure.

Yes, it does do Windows Updates no problem.
I have it set to notify me, but I download and install them myself.
I'll poke around a bit more on this when I get time.
